Blackpool Vintage 1963-77

EnglandOur second Blackpool Vintage post assembles another collection of retro Seasiders player and team images from the 1960s and 1970s.

The start of Blackpool’s 60s decline coincided with the sale in 1961 of Stanley Mathews to Stoke. The high League placings taken for granted during the previous decade disappeared to be replaced instead by an annual slog against relegation. Down Blackpool finally went in 1967 and apart from one brief season back in Division One a couple of years later, the club settled into life as a competitive Division Two side that usually fell just short of being genuine promotion contenders.

The days of Mathews and Mortensen at Bloomfield Road might have been long gone, but long-suffering Blackpool fans at least enjoyed the pleasure of watching fine players like the long-serving Jimmy Armfield, a young Alan Ball and cult-hero Tony Green wear the iconic tangerine shirt.
