Our final collection of Chelsea Vintage retro images features some of the movers and shakers at the club between 1973 and 1978. These were difficult days for a club haemorrhaging cash through a ruinously expensive stand construction and the lack of investment in the squad was telling.
Dave Sexton left after a poor start to the 1974-75 season and relegation that season proved unavoidable. Former player Eddie McCreadie took over as Sexton’s successor and he managed to drag Chelsea back to the top flight in 1977 before a contract dispute forced his exit. Ken Shellito, another former player, took over and was given the arduous task of trying to just keep the hard-up club in a League that less than a decade before they had been challenging to win.
