Welcome to the first in a series of Manchester United Vintage posts featuring retro player and team images of the Old Trafford club during the 1950s. Matt Busby’s appointment as manager in 1945 had the effect of transforming United into a competitive team again, and after narrowly missing out on the Division One title on several occasions in the late 1940s, the trophies would start to flood in during the following decade.
The championship win of 1952 was United’s first title success for 41 years, but it was the back-to-back championships in 1956 and 1957 that really captured broader public imagination. An exceptional young team nicknamed the ‘Busby Babes’ looked set to dominate the English game until many of its players were lost in the tragic Munich Air Disaster of 1958.
