The 1950s was a puzzling decade for older fans of Sheffield Wednesday so used to seeing their team finish in a top three place during the immediate pre-War years. Even holding down a Division One place at all now became an onerous and unsuccessful task with Wednesday suffering three relegations during this decade, offset only slightly by immediate promotion back to the top flight on each occasion.
